This book illustrates the fundamentals of fly fishing by connecting, in a graphic novel format, the principles of Sun Tzu with the basic topics that make up fly fishing. The ancient philosopher/general Sun Tzu is a legendary authority on the art of war. At its most basic, "The Art of War" is about competition. Fly fishing is a competitive endeavor. Sun Tzu's basic principle is "know your enemy and know yourself." He teaches fly fishing to a student by relating quotes from his treatise to illustrate fly fishing concepts. The intent is to minimize the narrative and rely on illustration to teach concepts. We also meet Murphy, the mythical soldier who originated "Murphy's Law" - if it CAN go wrong, it WILL go wrong. Murphy provides comment on Sun Tzu's principles, adds a touch of humor, and makes the point that it's OK to make mistakes and struggle while learning fly fishing.

Fly fishing enjoys a special place in the total fishing spectrum. Artists, writers, and newcomers to fishing are drawn to: the graceful elegance of fly casting, tying one's own flies, fooling a fish with fur and feathers, and the humaneness of releasing your catch. Fly fishing is the most romantic of fishing types. This book, with its extensive illustration, tells the story in a unique manner.
